In our society, horror movies always seem to be in demand and favored once released. Classics like “The Shining,” “Halloween,” and “The Ring” are still watched today, and more recent films like “The Quiet Place,” “It,” “Get Out” and “Bird Box” are parodied all over the internet, showing how popular those movies were.
So why do people crave to watch scary movies? Could there be science behind why people obsess over them?

According to some studies, scary movies can balance out life’s stress for some; or it can be used to treat phobias through exposure therapy. And by knowingly releasing our fight-or-flight response while watching scary movies, it helps us to control anxiety triggers. Watching scary movies can also release feel-good hormones and neurotransmitters such as dopamine and adrenaline.

Watching scary movies can also create a bonding experience between those who watch it together. Whether it’s between friends, lovers, or family, coming together and watching the movie in the same setting and facing their fears side by side could build their relationships and generate memories that last.
